We appear to be living in a golden age for podcasts and audio storytelling. More than a decade after the birth of the podcast, more news organizations are starting to explore audio as a medium, bringing their own distinct approaches to audio storytelling.
Meanwhile, as Michael Boland points out in this piece for StreetFight, at least 20 percent of mobile searches are currently conducted via voice. As the number of households using devices such as the Amazon Echo and Google Home continues to grow, so will the demand for locally produced, on-demand audio.
So, what could your news organization gain from adopting podcasts and audio storytelling –– and what do you need to know when it comes to launching your own podcast?
At this workshop, CCM associate director Joe Amditis will be joined by local news entrepreneur and long-time radio reporter Bernie Wagenblast to discuss the ins and outs of podcasting for local news. We’ll discuss why audio reporting and content can be valuable to local communities, how local publishers can add audio to their daily or weekly reporting, and why collaboration can be a valuable tool when local publishers want to add audio reporting and information to the local news offerings. We’ll also go over the basics of how to create, record, edit and distribute your own local news podcast.
IN THIS WORKSHOP, ATTENDEES WILL:
- Learn how and why more local and national news organizations are incorporating podcasts and audio storytelling into their reporting, digital, and community engagement strategies.
- Review sample podcasts that news organizations big and small are creating in their local communities.
- Turn ideas into action with hands-on materials to help you workshop your idea, prepare a realistic timeline for creating a podcast in your community, and develop a plan to reach the audience you want to reach.
- Work toward building your toolbox for recording, producing, and distributing your podcast.
THIS SESSION IS DESIGNED FOR:
Journalists and anyone working for a news organization who is interested in launching a podcast, or learning about new approaches to podcasting in a news organization context.
NOTE: This workshop is best for beginners who are new to creating podcasts.
