A student once asked me, in the middle of teaching Ancient Civilizations, “Why don’t we ever learn about Brooklyn?”

The notion bothered me all week. Why didn’t we? Student communities have so many rich learning opportunities that deserve to be explored outside of....
...a quick museum trip or a quick guest visit. We could have the same outcomes and use the same standards with Brooklyn-themed historical/current texts, experiences, and more. We wouldn’t have to roleplay, like my students pictured in my classroom above. ☝🏾
Instead of being confined to the classroom, we could learn without walls, on the steps of Jackie Robinson’s house, in the @Weeksville Heritage Center, in the archives of @BKLYNlibrary, & so much more.

Thread: Arguing with a Lefty About the Welfare State and More, Part I

1. Seems like a waste of time, doesn’t it? Lefties think we don’t live in a “welfare state” but at the same time don’t see any problem with “government assistance” of any kind. Let’s explore this.
2. Before getting started, many followers wonder where all the topics of my threads originate, as well as how I can keep pumping them out daily. I happen to like history & politics & their intersection. I find that most people ignore political history these days. Unwise!
3. Before my Tw@tter days, I used to collect and disseminate articles and commentary of interest to an extensive email distro list built up over many years, as well as engage in debates with a few of them on occasion.

A couple of weeks ago I was invited by @AnnalsATS to write an editorial for a paper. I loved the topic so I quickly agreed and started ordering my thoughts. It was a quick turnaround- 2 weeks, so I had to get moving.

I worked diligently on the draft and invited @vitaincerta to co-author- she is smart as a whip and a terrific writer and I knew she would really help to shape a well-written piece. She agreed and I sent her my #ShittyFirstDraft.

We built some hype around @realvibez with our branded car, sponsoring events like Stages, ATI, Blink and Reggae Sumfest but we also knew that we had to be authentic - the website actually had to have the content on it
We did not want sugar-coated B.S. interviews so we focused on cold, hard truths when I asked questions.

UK homes are not fit for the future. The Climate Change Act requires near-zero greenhouse gas emissions from homes by 2050 but efforts to reduce emissions have stalled. Most homes use fossil fuel heating; <500k have heat pumps or are connected to low-carbon heat networks. (2/10)
Today, 4.5m homes overheat in England, 1.8m people live in areas at significant risk of flooding and water consumption is higher than in other comparable countries. Risks are increasing due to climate change, but measures to adapt homes are not being taken up (3/10) #UKhousing
