Privacy policy for PocketLink

Last updated: September 18, 2025

This privacy policy explains how PocketLink ("we," "us," or "our") handles your information when you use our browser extension. Your privacy and trust are very important to us.

What information we collect

PocketLink is designed to be as private as possible. We store only the minimal data required for functionality:

  • Bit.ly access token: Required to create shortlinks on your behalf. You provide this token voluntarily on the extension's options page.
  • User preferences: Your selected interaction mode (Offscreen/Injection/Popup), notification settings, and fallback behavior preferences. These are stored locally to remember your choices.
  • Temporary shortlink data: When using popup mode, the generated shortlink is temporarily stored locally until you copy it or close the popup.

We do not collect, store, or transmit any personal information, browsing history, page content, URLs you shorten, or analytics data.

How we use your information

  • Bit.ly access token: Used exclusively to make authenticated API calls to the Bit.ly service (https://api-ssl.bitly.com/) for shortening URLs when you trigger the context menu.
  • User preferences: Used to customize your extension experience - which interaction mode to use, whether to show notifications, and fallback behavior settings.
  • Temporary shortlink data: Used only to display the shortened URL in popup mode and is automatically deleted when the popup closes.

How we store your information

All data is stored locally on your computer using Chrome's secure storage APIs:

  • chrome.storage.sync: Your Bit.ly token and user preferences are stored using this API, which securely syncs across your signed-in devices.
  • chrome.storage.local: Temporary shortlink data (popup mode only) is stored locally and automatically deleted.

These storage methods provide important benefits:

  1. Security: Data is sandboxed and not accessible by other websites or extensions.
  2. Privacy: All data remains on your devices - we never see or have access to it.
  3. Convenience: Settings sync across your Chrome-signed devices automatically.

Third-party services

The PocketLink extension communicates with one third-party service: the Bit.ly API. This is necessary for the core functionality of the extension. We are not responsible for the privacy practices of Bit.ly. You can review Bit.ly's privacy policy here.

Changes to this policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Any changes will be posted on this page. We encourage you to review this policy periodically.
