NJ Mobile News Lab wins NJ Society of Professional Journalists award

Mobile lab takes 1st place in Media-Affiliated Blog category

The New Jersey Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists has announced the winners of the 2017 Excellence in Journalism Awards for work done in 2016, and the NJ Mobile News Lab took first place in the Media-Affiliated Blog category.

‘Pop-Up Newsroom’ at Collaborative Journalism Summit demonstrates value of collaboration and mobile storytelling

I run a startup called Evrybit. It’s a mobile reporting app that streamlines collaborative storytelling. Think of Evrybit as a way to organize reporting and storytelling into one stream using text, photo, video and audio content. Like many early-stage apps, we want more users. One way startups can acquire more users is to increase product awareness with their target audience. For us, that’s journalists. A conference on collaborative journalism sounded like a target-rich environment.

From 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., eight students reported on the Collaborative Journalism Summit — taking pictures, recording videos, interviewing attendees, writing text — in one collaborative story. This is the story they produced on Day 1. They also created individual Evrybit stories on …

In Text We Trust: How SMS messaging tools can be used by journalists

Rebecca Harris, CEO of Purple, spoke to a community engagement class at the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism this month about how texting can be a useful tool for journalists. Purple allows users to sign up for messages directly texted from a reporter, expert or some other professional in a particular field. These messages, sent a few times a day or less often, are intended to provide a more direct link between readers and creators. There is also the capacity for readers to respond back to the leader of that channel….

Miguel Paz leads data skills training at Montclair State University

Plus: Resources and reference guides for local data journalists

Renowned data journalist and Poderopedia founder Miguel Paz made his way across the Hudson to Montclair State University in April to lead a data journalism workshop for a group of New Jersey journalists.

The workshop began with an overview of the fundamentals of working with data, including an explanation of what data is, how it can be used and how to read it. From there, Paz used sample datasets to work through the various functions of Excel and Sheets and explain how they can be used to find and tell stories that would otherwise have gone unnoticed…
