Join the Center for Cooperative Media

Our mission is to grow and strengthen local journalism, for the benefit of the citizens in the state of New Jersey.

There are four main ways you can become part of the Center for Cooperative Media’s network.

Become a funder of the Center

The Center is a grant-funded program based at the School of Communication and Media at Montclair State University. Our funders include Montclair State University, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation, the Democracy Fund and Websitesetup.org.

We’re always talking to other potential funders who want to support our programs or get our help to launch a new project. Interested in the funding a program at the Center? Contact Stefanie Murray at murrayst@montclair.edu.

If you want to support the Center with a smaller operational gift, you can also use this page to give directly to Montclair State University and make sure to earmark your funds under “Other” for the “Center for Cooperative Media.”

Become a partner of the Center

Join the Center as an official partner. Our partners are people and organizations who have a vested interest in seeing the media and information landscape in New Jersey grow, thrive and produce impactful local news. They are people and organizations who actively participate in networking, sharing and professional development activities with other New Jersey partners.

We have ongoing partnerships with organizations including the Center for Investigative Reporting, New America Media, Free Press, the New Jersey chapter of the Society for Professional Journalists, the New Jersey Press Association, the Institute for Nonprofit News, the Local Independent Online News Publishers group and many more.

Join the NJ News Commons

Are you a news or information provider based in New Jersey? Then you should be a member of our flagship project, the NJ News Commons. The NJ News Commons is a network of hyperlocal digital publishers, television stations, radio stations, nonprofits and newspapers across the state who cooperate and who all work in accordance with common journalism ethics principles. This group shares content, collaborates on stories, stays in touch with each other through social media, and supports one another as the industry changes. Interested in becoming a member of the NJ News Commons?

Click here to send us your information.

Once added, you’ll join an active private Facebook group and will be subscribed to get our daily statewide newsletter (except for Thursday, which is focused on the hyperlocal beat), and to get our monthly Center update newsletter. You’ll also get first dibs on upcoming professional development and networking events, trainings and more.

Become a friend of the Center

Not able to become a funder, partner or NJ News Commons member? Then be sure to at least sign up for our daily newsletter and we’ll keep you on top of the news in New Jersey and happenings at the Center.
