A Dream Remembered
The 50th anniversary of the march on Washington and Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech has many local New Jersey reverberations. Georgette Gilmore, editor of Barista Kids, related her Montclair family’s specific connection to the march on Baristanet.
Gilmore writes of following in the footsteps of her father-in-law who marched in 1963, as well as being a biracial family marching in 2013:
“We explained to our daughters that the feeling and atmosphere was different fifty years ago. That things were much more difficult for Black people in 1963. And that they owe so much to those who marched and gave their lives before them, so that they could have the life they live today.”
On More Monmouth Musings, Art Gallagher pulls together reporting from several sources of the course of years (from NJ.com to the Asbury Park Sun to TriCity News to the Asbury Park Press) to take a wide view of violence in Asbury Park — and ponder what might be done.
Back to school? Maybe not for one Paterson proposed charter: Neighbors are organizing to stop the school’s opening, saying it will exacerbate parking woes and traffic congestion. In Westfield, a local mom asks for clarification of anti-bullying laws.
Blogfinger continues to chronicle the saga of one town that has not received FEMA funding as yet to rebuild its waterfront.
Diane Lilli of Jersey Tomato Press is waiting for local reaction on a story she’s run about sex-in-a-box drive-through prostitution in Zurich. Perhaps this could be a good alternative to those Cedar Grove massage parlors?
Punsters will enjoy this one: Livingston was voted to have the best tasting water in the state by the New Jersey Chapter of the American Water Works Association, as very appropriately reported by Livingston TAP (get it?).
Cliffview Pilot sent us a bushel full of local reporting, highlighted by a good news story of a missing 81-year-old found safe and sound. Jerry DeMarco credits law enforcement, emergency workers and his audience for the good reporting:
“As far as I’m concerned, it’s EXACTLY what hyperlocal is all about. They give me all they can — info, photos, tip after tip after tip — and then trust me to get it accurate and readable….
“No matter where media heads, nothing will beat sourcing and shoe leather.”
